COLOUR - Refers to the degree to which a diamond is colourless.
Diamonds are found in almost every colour imaginable, but white-coloured diamonds remain most popular.
Diamonds are graded on a colour scale established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) which ranges from D (colourless) to Z. Yellow coloured diamonds (J–Z) are particularly desirable when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites (D–I) look stunning set in white gold or platinum.
Colours are graded under simulated North light (natural daylight occurring between noon and 2pm) and are compared to a master set for accuracy.
Diamonds also come in varying shades of yellow, orange, pink, blue, green, or – rarest of all – red. These diamonds are called ‘coloured fancies’ and are extremely rare and not readily available.
